Aalen

Industrial city in the Land (state) of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on the River Köcher, 65 km/40 mi east of Stuttgart; population (1995) 67,000. Textiles, iron, and optical goods are manufactured.

Aalen was one of the city-states of the Holy Roman Empire until 1802, and has some fine old houses. It also has the oldest baroque church in Germany.
