Watanabe, Akeo (1919–1990)

Japanese conductor. He studied in Tokyo and at the Juilliard School, New York from 1950. He was conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (1948–54) and the Nippon Philharmonic Orchestra (1956–68). From 1970 he was music director of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. He made frequent guest appearances with European and US orchestras.
