Waterbury

City in New Haven County, west Connecticut, USA, on the Naugatuck River, a tributary of the Housatonic, 30 km/19 mi north of New Haven and the shore of Long Island Sound; population (2000) 107,300. In the 19th century, it was the nation's largest producer of brass products, and had a thriving clock industry; today its more diversified economy produces chemicals, computer components, television parts, lighting fixtures, clothing, and precision instruments. Mattatuck Community College (1967), Post College (1890), Waterbury State Technical College (1964), and an extension of the University of Connecticut are all located in the city.

The city was founded in 1674. Industrialization developed at an early stage in its history, as the site was regularly flooded and agricultural yields were poor.
