Watervliet

Watervliet

Town in Albany County, east New York; population (1990) 11,100. It is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, across from Troy. A US arsenal, established here in 1813, remains active. Industries manufacture steel products, abrasives, textiles, and brick. The area was settled by the Dutch on land purchased from the Mohawks in 1630. In 1776 Mother Ann Lee founded the first informal Shaker community here.
