Watkins Glen

Town and administrative headquarters of Schuyler County, west-central New York; population (1990) 2,200. It is situated in the Finger Lakes, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, 34 km/21 mi west-southwest of Ithaca, amid spectacular scenery, including deep gorges, high waterfalls, and rocky cliffs. Its mineral springs have also made it a popular spa. Watkins Glen is a trading centre for local farms, wineries, and saltworks. Tourism is also important to the local economy. The Watkins Glen International automobile racetrack is 5 km/3 mi to the southwest.
