Watkinson, Carolyn (1949– )

English mezzo-soprano. She studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. She made many recordings of Handel (Rinaldo, Serse, Messiah) and Bach (B minor Mass and St Matthew Passion), and appeared frequently with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. She sang Poppea at Brussels and Spoleto, Mozart's Idamantes at Salzburg, and Ariodante at La Scala. She appeared at Glyndebourne from 1984, as Cherubino and Cenerentola. She sang with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood (1985), and performed Monteverdi's Nero at Innsbruck (1990).
