Watson, Tom (1949– )

US golfer who won eight major championships, including five British Open titles between 1975 and 1983. He was a six-time PGA Player of the Year and was ranked the number one player in the world 1978–82.

The PGA Championship was the only major to elude him, though he finished second in 1978. He won 43 tournaments in his career and also won four Senior major championships.

Watson, born in Kansas City, Missouri, joined the professional golfer's tour before his graduation from Stanford University in 1971. He won the US Open in 1982 and the Masters in 1977 and 1981, and led the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) in money earnings 1977–80 and in 1984.
