Watsonville

Town in Santa Cruz County, west-central California; population (1990) 31,100. It is situated on the Pajaro River, 5 km/3 mi east of Monterey Bay and 48 km/30 mi south of San Jose. Settled in the 1850s, it is a processing centre for local strawberries, mushrooms, dairy goods, apples, vinegar, lettuce, and other agricultural products. Other industries include granite quarrying, brickmaking, and various light manufactures.
