Waugh, Mark Edward (1965– )

Australian cricketer. An elegant right-handed batsman of prodigious talent, whose ability to score quick runs against the best bowling attacks made him a key member of both Australia's Test and One-day sides. The twin brother of Steve Waugh, he scored a century on his Test debut against England in 1991. A highly skilled fielder, he finished his career with a world record 181 catches in Test matches. Also useful as a bowler, he took many important wickets with his medium pace or off-spin deliveries. He helped Australia to win the 1999 World Cup. During the tournament he became Australia's most prolific scorer in One-day internationals, overtaking Allan Border's total of 6,524. He also became the first Australian to reach 1,000 runs in World Cup matches.

Born in Canterbury, Sydney, he made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 1985. Batting alongside his brother Steve in a Sheffield Shield Match against Western Australia in 1990, he established a new record for the highest fifth wicket partnership in first-class cricket with an undefeated stand of 464. He played English county cricket for Essex between 1988 and 1990, and also in 1992.

In December 1998, it was revealed that he, along with fellow Test player Shane Warne, had been fined by the Australian Cricket Board for receiving money from Indian bookmakers for providing information on playing conditions while on Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in 1994.
