Waugh, Steve (1965– )

Australian cricketer, and captain of the Australian team from February 1999 until his retirement in 2004. A right-handed batsman and medium pace bowler, he captained Australia to victory in the 1999 World Cup. In the period up to March 2001, he led his team to a record 16 consecutive Test victories.

Until Australia's 1989 tour of England when he scored his first Test century, his reputation mostly rested on a number of match-winning performances in One-day internationals. However, he matured into one of the finest batsmen in Test cricket and became only the second player in Test history to score 10,000 runs. In the 1990–91 season, playing for New South Wales against Western Australia, Waugh and his brother Mark Waugh established a first-class record fifth wicket partnership of 464 runs. In 1999, he became the first player to complete a century against all seven Test-playing countries.
