Waukegan

Industrial city, lake port, and administrative headquarters of Lake County, in northeast Illinois, USA; population (2000) 87,900. It is situated on a high bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, 58 km/36 mi north of Chicago and 14 km/9 mi south of the Wisconsin state border. The area west of the city has many lakes offering residential and recreational attractions. Shipping remains important. Local manufactures include outboard motors, wire and steel, gypsum and asbestos products, and pharmaceuticals.

Originally the site of an American Indian village, it was a French trading post and stockade until c. 1760. American settlers arrived after 1820. Illinois Beach State Park is on Lake Michigan immediately to the north. Comedian Jack Benny was born here in 1894.
