Wausau

Industrial town and administrative headquarters of Marathon County, central Wisconsin, USA; population (2000) 38,400. It is situated on the Wisconsin River, 135 km/84 mi northwest of Green Bay. The local economy relies on dairy products, paper and aluminium products, insurance, chemicals, and plastics. It was settled in 1839 as a lumbering centre. The town's Algonquian name means ‘far away’. A University of Wisconsin center (1933) is in Wausau. Rib Mountain State Park is 5 km/3 mi southwest of the town.
