wavelength division multiplexing

Technique for sending multiple streams of light down a single fibre-optic cable. The different signals have slightly different wavelengths, or colours. WDM can greatly increase the capacity of existing fibre-optic links and thus dramatically lower the cost of long-distance communications. BT started operating its first two WDM links in 1997 with 16 channels, which made them 16 times faster than before.
