wavelength division multiplexing

Technique for sending multiple streams of light down a single fibre-optic cable. The different signals have slightly different wavelengths, or colours. WDM can greatly increase the capacity of existing fibre-optic links and thus dramatically lower the cost of long-distance communications. BT started operating its first two WDM links in 1997 with 16 channels, which made them 16 times faster than before.

Booth 6427 Intended for commissioning and lighting channels in dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) networks, the FTB 9310 Channel Selector enables non-intrusive, low-loss and high-isolation channel filtering.
However, the emergence of wavelength-division multiplexing now requires that chromatic dispersion itself be measured over the [approximately equal to]80 nm optical bandwidth occupied by multiple wavelength channels.
Alcatel will be supplying its dense wavelength-division multiplexing technology for the 18,000 km SAC network which will link seven countries by 2001; Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, the U.
