Waverly

Town and administrative headquarters of Bremer County, northeast Iowa; population (1996) 8,650. It is situated on the Cedar River, 23 km/14 mi northwest of Waterloo. It is a trade centre for the surrounding agricultural area. The main industries are food and condensed milk processing, and the manufacture of excavating equipment.

Waverly was settled from 1850 on the west bank of the Cedar River. It was laid out in 1853 when a water powered sawmill was constructed. By 1868 the population was over 2,000 with several woollen mills along the river. Waverly was the county seat of Bremer County from 1853. The first courthouse was built in 1854, the second in 1858 and the present building was erected in 1937. The town is home to Wartburg College, which was founded in 1879.
