Waxhaw

Town in Union County, south North Carolina; population (1990) 1,300. It is located 19 km/12 mi southwest of Monroe, along the South Carolina border.

US President Andrew Jackson was born in 1767 in the Waxhaw Settlement, which lay in this area along the Catawba River; the exact site is unknown, and both North Carolina and South Carolina have claimed him. Jackson himself felt that he had been born in South Carolina. The Andrew Jackson State Park in South Carolina is 13 km/8 mi north of Lancaster.
