Waycross

Town and administrative headquarters of Ware County, southeast Georgia; population (1990) 16,400. It is located 145 km/90 mi southwest of Savannah. Founded in the 1820s, it gradually became a transportation hub, first of pioneer and stagecoach trails, then of railways. Today, sawmills, turpentine and honey production, and railyards are mainstays of the local economy, along with tourism. The town is a gateway to Okefenokee Swamp.

He grew up in Waycross, Georgia, in a family environment where excess seems to have been the norm.
Large Washington palm trees planted in front of motels at Waycross, Georgia, have survived extreme cold winters, and even when leaf canopies were frozen and black, the new shoots grew back in the Spring to renew their beauty.
Born in Waycross, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie (Cowart) Jernigan and was educated in Savannah, Georgia schools.
