Wayne

Town in Wayne County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 19,900. It is situated on the Lower River Rouge, and is an industrial and residential suburb, 27 km/17 mi southwest of Detroit. The town produces aircraft and auto parts, oil and gas equipment, and foundry products. Several Ford Motor Company plants are situated here.

Wayne was settled in the early 1820s. Its manufacturing capacity and its population grew markedly following World War II.

Town and administrative headquarters Wayne County, northeast Nebraska; population (1990) 5,100. It is located 37 km/23 mi northeast of Norfolk. It is a trading hub for livestock, grain, dairy, and poultry producers. The town in home to Wayne State College (1891). The Winnebago and Omaha American Indian reservations are both nearby.

Town in Passaic County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 47,000. It is located 6 km/4 mi northwest of Paterson. It is a residential suburb, with three lakes, a performing arts centre, and a large retail shopping mall. Its industries produce rubber, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronic components, and machine tools.

Wayne was settled in the 18th century by Dutch, English, and French Huguenot farmers. The Dey Mansion (1740) was Revolutionary commander George Washington's headquarters in 1780.
