Wayne, John (1907–1979)

US actor. He played the archetypal Western hero: plain-speaking, brave, and solitary. His films include Stagecoach (1939), Red River (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and True Grit (1969; Academy Award).

Wayne often worked with US director John Ford. He also appeared in many war films, such as The Sands of Iwo Jima (1945), In Harm's Way (1965), and The Green Berets (1968). His other films include The Quiet Man (1952), The High and the Mighty (1954), and The Shootist (1976), his last. He was active in conservative politics.
