Waynesboro| Town in Burke County, east Georgia; population (1990) 5,700. It is situated 48 km/30 mi south-southwest of Augusta. Settled in the 1780s in plantation country, it remains an agricultural centre; it also produces fabricated metals, canned goods, and veneer, and is known as a bird dog training and testing centre. The Vogtle nuclear power plant (1987) is nearby. |

Waynesboro was occupied by the Confederate army in October 1863. |

It is an industrial and trade centre in an agricultural area noted especially for its apples. The town produces stoves, plastics, flour, rayon, marine hardware, and pencils. |
