Waynesboro

Town in Burke County, east Georgia; population (1990) 5,700. It is situated 48 km/30 mi south-southwest of Augusta. Settled in the 1780s in plantation country, it remains an agricultural centre; it also produces fabricated metals, canned goods, and veneer, and is known as a bird dog training and testing centre. The Vogtle nuclear power plant (1987) is nearby.

Waynesboro

Town in Franklin County, south-central Pennsylvania; population (1990) 9,600. It is located 80 km/50 mi southwest of Harrisburg, to the west of South Mountain, in a resort area. It manufactures machinery and metal products, clothing, and flour, and is a shipping centre for regional fruit growers and dairy farmers. Waynesboro was occupied by the Confederate army in October 1863.

Waynesboro

Town in Augusta County, north-central Virginia; population (1990) 18,500. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 19 km/12 mi east-southeast of Staunton. It is an industrial and trade centre in an agricultural area noted especially for its apples. The town produces stoves, plastics, flour, rayon, marine hardware, and pencils.

An American Civil War battle, fought here on 2 March 1865, gave the Union army under Philip Sheridan a victory over the outnumbered Confederate troops of Jubal Early.
