Wear Valley

Wear Valley

District of County Durham, northeast England; area 505 sq km/195 sq mi; population (2001) 61,350. The area comprises the upper Wear valley and part of southwest Durham. In the east of the district coal mining has been replaced by manufacturing as the chief industry. Lead mining has ceased in the upper Wear valley but limestone is still quarried. Farming extends to a height of 425 m/1,400 ft above sea level, and the dale provides recreational facilities for Durham.

GREEN support services company eaga has seen its green energy work with Wear Valley District Council recognised at this year's prestigious British Renewable Energy Awards.
The move means Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust will have greater freedom to run its own affairs and will give local people more of a say in decisions about future services.
