Weber, Ben (1916–1979)

US composer and teacher. He studied at the University of Chicago but was largely self-taught as a composer. He adopted the 12-note system in 1938 and was encouraged by Schoenberg, however, his music retained tonal associations. He moved to New York in 1945.

Symphony on Poems of William Blake for baritone and orchestra (1952), violin concerto (1954), Prelude and Passacaglia for orchestra (1955), Chamber Fantasy for small orchestra (1959), piano concerto (1961); two string quartets (1942, 1952), two string trios (1943, 1946), serenade for string quintet (1955); Sinfonia Clarion for orchestra (1974).
