Webster, William H(edgcock) (1924– )

US lawyer and government official. A St Louis lawyer (1949–60) and US attorney (1960–71), he was an outstanding federal court of appeals judge (1971–78). Hired to restore integrity to the FBI (1978–87), he used electronic surveillance to pursue organized crime. He followed William Casey as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1987–91). Webster was born in St Louis, Missouri.
