Weckmann, Matthias

Weckmann, Matthias (c. 1619–1674)

German organist and composer. He became a pupil of Schütz as a choirboy in the electoral chapel at Dresden and in 1637 was sent at the elector's expense to study further with J Praetorius at Hamburg. In 1641 he became court organist at Dresden, where he remained until 1655, except for a visit to Nykøbing in the service of the crown prince of Denmark, some time before 1647. He then became organist at St James's Church, Hamburg. He organized a concert society (Collegium musicum with Scheidemann, Selle, Schop, and other Hamburg musicians) and during a visit to Dresden competed as an organist with Froberger.
