| Village in Somerset, England, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Glastonbury; population (2001) 3,200. It is associated with the peace treaty (sometimes called the Treaty of Chippenham) concluded here in 878 between King Alfred and Guthrum the Dane. By this treaty the country north of Watling Street was ceded to the Danes. |
