Weigl, Karl (1881–1949)

Austrian composer. He studied musicology at Vienna University, worked as assistant conductor under Mahler at the Vienna Opera, became a teacher at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and later lecturer at the university. He settled in the USA in 1938, becoming an American citizen in 1943 and teaching successively at Hartford, Brooklyn and Boston.

Cantata

Weltfeier for solo voices, chorus, orchestra and organ.

Instrumental

six symphonies (1908–47); various concertos;

Chamber

eight string quartets (1903–49); cello and piano sonata.

Vocal

songs with piano and with chamber accompaniment.
