Weir, J Alden

Weir, J(ulian) Alden (1852–1919)

US painter. He was a founder in 1898 of the Ten, an Impressionist group. His paintings include Idle Hours (1888). In 1991 his property in Wilton/Ridgefield, Connecticut, was named a National Historic Site, the first artist's home so designated. Weir was born in West Point, New York. He studied briefly in Paris, France (1873), then travelled in Europe (1873–83). On returning to the USA, he worked in New York City, before settling in Connecticut (1883).
