Weis, Karel (1862–1944)

Czech composer and conductor. He studied at the Prague Conservatory, and with Skuherský and Fibich at the Organ School. After various posts as an organist, teacher, and orchestra player (violin and horn), he became conductor at the National Theatre at Brno in 1886. From 1888, however, he devoted himself to composition.

operas Viola (after Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, 1892; revised as The Twins, 1917), The Polish Jew (after Erckmann-Chatrian), The Attack on the Mill (after Zola, 1912), The Blacksmith of Lesetin (1920), operettas The Village Musicians and The Revisor (after Gogol's comedy).

Other works

choral scene Triumfator; symphonic poem Helios and Selene; string quartet; violin and piano sonata; piano pieces; folksong arrangements.
