Weiss, Adolph (1891–1971)

US composer of German parentage. He studied piano, violin, and bassoon, and at the age of 16 played first bassoon with the Russian Symphony Orchestra of New York and then in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Mahler. He then studied composition at Columbia University with C Rybner and later with Schoenberg in Vienna. Later worked with various California orchestras.

Works

Orchestral

I Segreti (1923) and American Life (1928) for orchestra; theme and variations for orchestra; trumpet concerto.

Choral

The Libation Bearers, choreographed cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra.

Chamber

three string quartets (1925–32).

Other

music for wind instruments; songs; piano music.
