Wellesley

Town in Norfolk County, east Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 26,600. It is situated on the Charles River, 23 km/14 mi southwest of Boston. It has some light industry and a shopping district, but is primarily an education centre. It was incorporated in 1881.

The area was originally settled as part of Dedham. It then split off as part of Needham, split again as part of West Needham, and then became Wellesley in 1881. It was named after the birth name of the wife of Horatio Hunnewell who was a co-founder of Wellesley College (1870).

Wellesley College (1870), on Lake Waban, was originally a women's seminary, and remains an all-women institution. Babson College (1919), Massachusetts Bay Community College (1961), and a number of private schools are also in this affluent suburb. The town also has a symphony orchestra.
