Wellfleet

Town in Barnstable County, southeast Massachusetts; population (2000) 2,700. It is situated on the north of Cape Cod, 19 km/12 mi south-southeast of Provincetown. A summer resort and fishing village, it attracts artists and has chic boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. Much of the town's land area is in the Cape Cod National Seashore Park, and Wellfleet is its headquarters. The town was incorporated in 1763.

In the 19th century, Wellfleet was a whaling and fishing centre. It is famous for its oysters and has 11 entries on the National Register of Historic place, including houses and historic districts.
