Wellsville

Town in Allegany County, southwest New York; population (1990) 8,100. It is located 40 km/25 mi east of Olean and 11 km/7 mi north of the Pennsylvania state line, on the Genesee River. American Indians used oil from the region and sold it to Europeans in the late 18th century. Settled in 1795, Wellsville became a centre of the early New York oil industry.
