Wembley Stadium
Sports ground in north London, England, completed in 1923 for the British Empire Exhibition 1924–25. It was the scene of the annual Football Association (FA) Cup final from 1923 to 2000, and again from 2007. The 1948 Olympic Games and many concerts, including the Live Aid concert of 1985, were held here. Adjacent to the main stadium are the Wembley indoor arena and conference centre. The stadium, together with its famous twin towers, was knocked down in November 2000. It reopened in 2006 with a seated capacity of 90,000 and an arch rising 133 m/436 ft above the stadium as its signature feature.
The largest recorded crowd at Wembley is 126,047 for its first FA Cup final, though many thousands more are thought to have attended. England play most of their home soccer matches at Wembley. Other sports events over the years have included show jumping, American football, rugby league, rugby union, boxing, hockey, Gaelic football, hurling, and baseball.
