Wernigerode

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Saxony-Anhalt, at the foot of the Harz Mountains, 64 km southwest of Magdeburg; population (1994) 36,900. There are engineering and chemical industries. The town dates from the Middle Ages.

Wernigerode once belonged to the Hanseatic League trading federation. The town contains many old, half-timbered houses. A narrow-gauge railway runs from here into the Harz.
