Wesel

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Lippe, 38 km/24 mi north of Duisburg; population (1994) 462,600. It has glass, electronic, precision-engineering, and food-processing industries. Wesel was almost totally destroyed by bombing during World War II. The Gothic cathedral of St Willibrord dates from the 15th century.
