Weslaco

Town in Hidalgo County, south Texas; population (1990) 21,900. It is located 56 km/35 mi west-northwest of Brownsville, in the irrigated Lower Rio Grande Valley. The town is a centre for the canning and shipping of truck crops and citrus fruits. It has several agricultural research and training centres. Weslaco also has natural gas wells.

The town's name is an acronym for the W E Stewart Land Company, which developed the site from 1917.
