Wesley, Samuel Sebastian

Wesley, Samuel Sebastian (1810–1876)

English organist and composer, illegitimate son of Samuel Wesley. He was a pupil of his father and choirboy in the Chapel Royal from 1820. In 1826 he became organist of Hereford Cathedral, and in 1835 (when he married) of Exeter Cathedral; he was organist of Leeds Parish Church 1842–1849, of Winchester Cathedral 1849–1865, and then, until his death, of Gloucester Cathedral. He was awarded a doctorate in music at Oxford in 1839, and became organ professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1850. He continued his father's promotion of Bach's music and conducted the St Mathew Passion at Gloucester (Three Choirs Festival) in 1871.
