Westward Ho!

Resort on the north coast of Devon, southwest England, 3 km/2 mi northwest of Bideford; population (2001) 1,700. Westward Ho! was named after a novel by Charles Kingsley published in 1855.

The writer Rudyard Kipling was educated at the United Services College (now a terrace of houses), which provided the background to his book of schoolboy stories Stalky and Co (1899). Pebble Ridge, jutting out into the Taw-Torridge estuary, is 3 km/2 mi long.
