West Bend

Town and administrative headquarters of Washington County, southeast Wisconsin; population (1990) 23,900. It is situated on the Milwaukee River, 45 km/28 mi northwest of Milwaukee. Local manufactures include aluminium utensils, household appliances, outboard motors, farm machinery, and beverages. A University of Wisconsin centre (1968) is in the town.

The town was founded in 1845 as the site for a sawmill and gristmill. In 1911 the West Bend Aluminium Company was established, stimulating much industrial growth. Lizard Mound County Park, 6 km/4 mi northeast of West Bend, has 30 American Indian mounds in animal, bird, and geometric shapes.
