West Branch

Small town in Cedar County, east-central Iowa; population (1996 est) 2,100. It is located 16 km/10 mi east of Iowa City. This farming community is the birthplace of US president Herbert Hoover, and the site of the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, which includes the Hoover Presidential Museum and Library, and attracts nearly 250,000 visitors annually.

The first settlers came in 1850. By 1853 there were eight families including that of Herbert Hoover's grandfather. The town was laid out in 1869. West Branch was largely Quaker and a Quaker Meeting Hall is amongst 16 neighbouring buildings on the national register of historic places. These buildings form a National Historic Site, established in 1965 and their exteriors are all restored to their 19th century appearance.

Hoover is interred together with his wife in West Branch, overlooking an area of restored prairie grassland.
