Eyre Peninsula

Triangular peninsula in South Australia, lying between the Great Australian Bight to the west and Spencer Gulf to the east, and bounded on the north by the Gawler Ranges. Grain (especially wheat) grown on the Eyre Peninsula is exported from Port Lincoln, Wallaroo, Edithburgh, Ardrossan, and Cedana. Fishing is important in the area; iron is mined at the Middleback Ranges in the northern part of the peninsula, and there are steelworks at Whyalla.

The only seal colony on mainland Australia is at Point Labatt. The peninsula is named after Edward John Eyre (1815–1901), who explored the Australian interior in the 1840s.
