West Lafayette

Town in Tippecanoe County, west-central Indiana; population (1990) 25,900. It is situated on the Wabash River, and adjoins Lafayette, of which it is a residential suburb, with some industry. Purdue University (1869), one of the USA's oldest and largest land-grant institutions, is based on the town's west side. The town is built on the site of Fort Ouiatenon (c. 1719), the first military post in the state.
