West Orange

West Orange

Town in Essex County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 39,100. It is located 8 km/5 mi northwest of Newark, in the Watchung Mountains. It is part of a large suburban complex housing New York area commuters. There are also office buildings and such manufactures as pharmaceuticals, clothing, and office equipment.

The home, ‘Glenmont’, and the laboratory complex of the US scientist and inventor Thomas Edison are included in the Edison National Historic Site. Eagle Rock Reservation, with views of New Jersey and the Manhattan skyline, is to the northeast. Originally called Fairmont, West Orange was separated from Orange in 1862.
