West Palm Beach

Town, coastal resort, and administrative headquarters of Palm Beach County, southeast Florida, USA; population (2000) 82,100. It is situated on the lagoon, Lake Worth, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Industries include transistors, aircraft parts, computers, building materials, and citrus fruits; tourism is important to the economy. It is home to Palm Beach Atlantic College (1968).

Like Palm Beach, to which it is connected by bridges, it was developed by railroad tycoon Henry M Flagler in the early 1890s. Flagler's home here is now a museum. The Atlanta Braves and Montréal Expos play spring training baseball in the city. An international airport is on the southwestern outskirts.
