West Plains

Town and administrative headquarters of Howell County, south Missouri; population (1990) 8,900. It is situated on the Ozark Plateau, 136 km/85 mi southeast of Springfield, and 26 km/16 mi north of the Arkansas state border. The only sizeable city in its region, West Plains has served as a livestock market and distribution point and also produces dairy products, flour, and lumber. The town was laid out in 1858 and was subject to Confederate raids during the Civil War.
