West Yellowstone

Small town in Gallatin County, southwest Montana; population (1990) 900. It is located 113 km/70 mi south of Bozeman, lying close to both the Idaho and Wyoming state lines. It serves as the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, and its economy is dependent on tourism. The area was known to local American Indians as the Land of Evil Spirits, and was shunned by most tribes. The ancient Sheepeaters once hunted here; their pictographs can be found on canyon walls near the town.
