Westborough

Town in Worcester County, east-central Massachusetts; population (2000) 18,000. It is located 16 km/10 mi east of Worcester. Industries include the manufacture of electronics, tools, paper, machinery, leather, abrasives, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Since the 1970s Westborough has become a popular location for computer and other corporations. It was incorporated in 1717.

The area was originally the site of a number of American Indian trails prior to European contact. The first Europeans in the area were led by the English settler John Oldham in 1633. The town was settled in the 1670s and industrialized in the 1830s. Its growth owed much to it being a crossroads town.

The town is the birthplace of the lawyer and inventor of the cotton gin, Eli Whitney, and is also home to a state hospital, a boys' school, and a state correctional school.
