Westbury, Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury (1800–1873)

English lawyer and Liberal politician. In the two administrations of Lord Palmerston, he attained the highest offices as a government legal officer, being appointed solicitor-general in 1852, attorney-general in 1856, and lord chancellor in 1861.

Westbury was born at Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, and educated at Bristol and Wadham College, Oxford. He became a barrister in 1823, and was first elected to Parliament in 1851.
