Västerås

Capital of Västmanland county in south central Sweden; population (1995) 123,700. It has engineering factories, chiefly electrical and metallurgical, and is Sweden's largest inland port. The town dates from the Middle Ages, and has a castle and a cathedral.

The town is situated on the north bank of Lake Mälaren, at the estuary of the River Svartån. It developed with the export of copper and iron ore mined inland. By the end of the Middle Ages it was one of the most important cities in Sweden.
