Wailing Wall![]() Bar mitzvah rites at the Western Wall, Jerusalem. The wall is the only remaining part of Herod's Temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in AD 70. ![]() Two sacred places in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock and the Wailing Wall. The Dome stands on the legendary site of Muhammad's journey to heaven and is the third holiest place of Islam after Mecca and Medina. The Wailing (or Western) Wall is the only remaining part of the original temple of King Solomon, and is the holiest place of pilgrimage and prayer for Jews. The remaining part of the Temple in Jerusalem, a sacred site of pilgrimage and prayer for Jews. Midrash tradition holds that this portion of wall avoided destruction in AD 70 because the Holy Spirit (Shekinah) resided there. For this reason, people will pray there aloud (‘wailing’), slip prayers on pieces of paper in between the stones, and sometimes hold ceremonies such as bar mitzvahs.
